The Steel Band or Steel Orchestra is a type of ensemble originating in Trinidad and Tobago composed primarily of different sizes of steel drums or “pans”. In this workshop series, participants will learn the basics of playing Pan through one of three main instruments: Tenor Pan (or Lead Pan), Double Second

Pan, and Triple Guitar Pan. There are no musical prerequisites for this series, and we are excited to welcome learners of all experiences to the world of Pan.

Instructor Kyle von Neumann is currently an apprentice boat builder at The Apprenticeshop in Rockland. He comes to us by way of Atlanta, Georgia where he started and ran a middle school steel band program, started and ran a wood shop class, and built a career in education focused on inquiry as an experiential process.
